High School: Art Hall Of Fame

This year we started a new Hudsonville High School Hall of Fame.  Each year we will be selected 3-4 artists to be professionally displayed outside the Freshman Campus Auditorium.  These are art students who exhibit leadership in the art classroom and unique command of skills and techniques with various materials and media over their four year tenure.  A piece of their art work will be permanently displayed along with their name and graduating year.  Below are some of the art pieces you can come see displayed at our Freshman Campus.  Who knows.... maybe you or your student will be our next hall of fame inductee.

High School: Macro Photography

Before students jump into the world of photoshop and photography, I have my students take a day to go outside and explore their cameras. The fist setting that I introduce them to is the macro setting. Another word for macro is close-up. Students were required to take a variety of macro shots. They then used these photos to help them learn some of the basic skills in photoshop. Students had to work with adjusting the levels to work with contrast, changing a photo to black and white, cropping a photo, and also taking a photograph, selecting one area of it and making part of it color and the other part black and white. Here are a few examples of what the students were able to do this trimester.

Art II Painting Tempera Paint

Our Art II painting students got their feet wet by learning how to transition and create different values using tempera paint.  We created an abstract composition with a non-objective like background using a monochromatic color scheme.

Objectives:

Students will:

• Review the 6 categories of value
• Be introduced to monochromatic painting
• Be introduced to the Rule of thirds
• Learn how to create a value scale with tempera paint
• Learn about tint and shade
• Learn how to create a sphere using tempera paint
• Use the art principles of Contrast, Balance, Movement, Emphasis to create Unity

High School Digital Photography

One of the most important parts of creating an interesting piece of artwork is the composition that is used. Digital Photography students have been learning about many different types of compositions. Composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art.

High School Art 1- 1pt Mixed Media Collage

Objectives:

• Students will create a work using 1pt perspective
• Students will create a interesting composition
• Students will work with collage
• Students will focus on emphasis in their art piece.
• Students will work with recycled materials.

After learning about 1pt and 2pt perspective, the high school Art 1 students were able to use their new skills to create abstract mixed media pieces. The students were to draw at least 7 shapes that all receded back to one vanishing point. Once drawn out, the students chose a color scheme, then they used tempera paint to color the sides of each shape. Each side had to be a different value of the colors that they were using.

They were then able to work on completing an interesting background, using pieces cut out or ripped from magazines. The two pieces were then combined to create an interesting composition.

Objectives for Students:

• Learn about how to use colored pencil
• Learn how to set up a grid drawing
• Learn how to create the 6 categories of value 
• Learn about Non-Objective art

High School art students all took pics of themselves with sunglasses on.  After learning about how to set up grid art, they got busy getting their initial sketch down with contour lines.  Students then used the six categories of value to add depth to their portraits.  Finally students were to produce a non-objective design in their sunglasses that correlated to their background in colored pencil.  Here are some of the results:
