Bauer Elementary: Second Grade Leaf Prints

Second grade students at Bauer Elementary learned about printmaking by viewing examples of print art, and discussing where we might see prints in everyday life. Some examples the students mentioned include footprints in sand, fingerprints on windows, and animal tracks along a trail.

Next, they demonstrated this technique using realistic leaf stamps. Students carefully painted the stamps, turned them over, and “tip-toed” with their fingertips to ensure the print was evenly transferred!

Once the prints dried, we identified and discussed warm colors. Second graders used "warm" colored pencils, plus a touch of brown, to create a few colorful leaves adding a nice touch to their beautiful print art!

To complete the project, each child took turns visiting their peers' tables and complimenting them on their artwork. Students were encouraged to use art vocabulary from the lesson. They did a fabulous job and enjoyed this very much! A few compliments I heard were, "I like how you used different warm colors on each leaf," and "This is my favorite leaf print on your paper." Way to go second graders!

Learning Targets:
I can create print art using stamps.
I can name warm colors and use them in my artwork.

Jamestown Elementary: Welcome Back Mural!

WELCOME TO THE JAMESTOWN ELEMENTARY ART ROOM!

As always, this year on the first day of school, we began with an all school project that every grade level participated in. We created a mural of a tree where each student contributed their own uniquely patterned leaf to the branches. We reviewed the art elements in our designs focusing on: line, color (warm and cool), shape, space, pattern, and value.

Our theme as a staff this year is: Jamestown Elementary: "Reaching our unique growth potential."
As a tree grows, we grow each day, and we are all unique (just like our leaves). Our goal is to do our best and to reach our unique growth potential.

Learning Goals: I can...
- Explain what a mural is
- Use art to create a welcoming environment
- Collaborate with other students on a group project
-Use the art elements effectively in my artwork

Georgetown Elementary: What's YOUR Name?

Georgetown Elementary's first art projects this year are all about NAMES!  Each grade level learned a different way to write their name – 1st and 2nd grades wrote in BUBBLE LETTERS, 3rd grade was challenged with BLOCK LETTERS, and grades 4 and 5 were excited to practice writing their name in CURSIVE.  Students then added the art elements of line, shape, and color to turn their names into a work of art.

We also spent some time looking at how other artists use words and letters in their art pieces.  We looked at the words that Faith Ringgold includes around her Story Quilts.

Andy Warhol's "100 Cans" and Juan Miro's "Hirondelle/Amour" also brought some interesting discussions about the way artists use words in their art making.

"I Can" Goals
I can write my name in block, bubble, or cursive letters.
I can talk about different works of art.
I can use the art elements of line, shape, and color to create a work of art using my own name.
